An Unstoried Life

There is a deep responsibility for life that lives within each of us. As we move along the spiritual path we learn to surrender, to let life be as it is, for it is as it is whether we let it be or not. Eventually when the surrender is complete, a new understanding dawns: this is all mind, not my mind, but Infinite Mind. Life is spontaneously being created with each thought, each breath, each new experience … and when that barb tunnels deep within, so deep that there is no backing out, the idea of true responsibility awakens.

That is the moment that we truly begin to live. We realize that what has come before was nothing more than a karmic playground, an endlessly enticing wheel of cause and effect, the autopilot life most live.

Prior to that moment, we are not aliveness creatively expressing. We are the walking dead, caught in the web of our own programmed ideologies unable to spin any meaningful exit, not responsible for anything, for we are at the effect of life. We control nothing.

We appear to find escape hatches, but those pop-up doors merely open into another twist or turn in the ghostly labyrinth, seemingly different, but mockingly the same. Round and round we go.

We create and recreate our storylines with new and used characters, repeating lessons again and again, thinking we are making progress, only to bump into the same plot, new twist, again and again.

It is a profound mystery to be shown the exit, to step out of the story into what is likely another story. Earlier releases have each brought a new story into being, not the absence of all stories. We’ve gone through so many shifts along this path that brought us to this very specific, totally unique moment that we have no idea what an unstoried life could possibly be like … and not knowing, standing naked with no idea at all, not caring if anything or nothing appears, has subsumed that which came before.

There is something different here, something more transparent that feels genuinely risky, and yet, holds no weight. Weighty matters float free in the abyss of sacred pull. Attachment to an outcome, shatters into pieces. There is only this and the willingness, the readiness to simply be.

Whatever this is, this that I can only point to, it is a loss, not a gain, the pure scent of human forfeiture (one from which there is no recovery), shimmering with full and utter embrace before the step reveals itself, let alone before it is taken. It is a leap of faith, unlike any that have come before, a readiness to rewrite all stories of limitation, all ideas that limitation is possible.

Imagine the body remembering what it is beneath the layers of story, the mind shining with clarity, empty and spacious, the organic release of all that one doesn’t even know is woven into identity, reality, possibility, potentiality.

This is movement beyond belief, the gracious acceptance, the recognition of original responsibility.

Before this yielding, a yielding life does not us, we are at the effect of our storylines, less and less so as we move through the chambers of surrender, but once the power of our mystical mythical being is unleashed we move beyond the predictable, into what a human mind would term the dead zone where no human beliefs can survive.

The storyline is one of healing worlds, of winning, of creating heaven on earth, of dying and entering heaven … whatever version of life, of right, of winning, of heaven has its claws in us. With that mindset, we will not heal our world. We will only justify the wars within, the wars without, and create more division. If I hold a belief, any belief, I am in the world and of it. I am in the game, riding the storyline for all it’s worth. I am a co-conspirator with the illusion.

So I pay attention. I observe what’s happening. I feel what is mine to feel. I recognize the merry-go-round, the inescapable innumerable labyrinths of life. I watch and wait until life finds me ripened, ready, willing, and silently kneel to this ever-present grace.
